How it is calculated
Under Article 51 of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 and Cabinet Resolution No. 1 of 2022: 21 days of the last basic wage for each of the first five years and 30 days for each year after, with part years paid pro rata. Nothing is due before one year of continuous service. Unpaid absence days are not counted. The total cannot exceed two years’ basic wage. The daily wage is the monthly basic ÷ 30.
Service before 2 February 2022
The old law (Federal Law 8 of 1980) reduced gratuity for workers who resigned from unlimited contracts (one-third for 1–3 years, two-thirds for 3–5 years). The current law has no such reduction and this calculator applies it to all service. If you resigned and much of your service was before 2 February 2022, the authority or a court may treat that period differently, so ask before relying on the figure.
Free zones, DIFC and ADGM
Most free zones follow the federal labour law. DIFC replaced gratuity with the DEWS savings scheme and ADGM has its own employment regulations, so this calculator does not apply there; check with your employer or the zone.
Not covered here
Domestic workers have their own law (Federal Decree-Law 9 of 2022). UAE and GCC nationals are generally covered by pension schemes instead. Part-time contracts, government jobs and employers in an alternative savings scheme are calculated differently.
